Hugo Maia

Lisbon, 1979. Researcher and translator holding a BA and MA in Anthropology from the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences (FCSH), New University of Lisbon. He studied Arabic at the Bourguiba Institute (Tunisia) and spent five years in Rabat (2009–2014) working across video editing, photography, and cultural management. Director of the documentary O Casino (Doclisboa, 2006), his research interests center on contemporary literature and socio-political movements in the Maghreb and Mashriq. His major translations from Arabic into Portuguese include classics like As mil e uma noites / One Thousand and One Nights (E-Primatur), alongside contemporary works by Mohamed Choukri (Antígona) and Adania Shibli (Dom Quixote). He currently lives and works in Lisbon.
