não me transporto no cavalo do nevoeiro

                                                                                with adrienne rich

What I came to hunt:
the monsters under the bed
the lords of hatred
the zombies we try to avoid

the poem is short, it does not disturb the home
but it wanders the streets of the world
to answer a page of history
that waits for me to fall silent to sing victory

what I came to hunt
I am not afraid, I make no apology
I am not charitable, I will pass on theories of liberation
I choose no trenches, I know not how to die

no, I do not want to save anyone
I take up no arms, I bring no helm
bronze gauntlets and greaves
nor the sword I won in Paris

I ride no horse of mist
I hold no sceptre in the dawn of vision
nor my heart in a library’s harness

I came to say:
I have not readied my heart for war.

cujo mapa não incluiu as ruas onde cresci
e me tornei órfã das promessas oficiais
do pleno emprego, do sol gratuito
metade do preço, metade do sonho

This country they taught me to call my own
whose map did not include the streets where I grew up
and became an orphan of the official promises
of full employment, of the free sun
half the price, half the dream
in the wounded flesh of the season's offer

this country I keep calling my own
for forty and eight hundred years without change
in the lie of not going hungry because there is bread
and the islands of oil spit diesel and whiskey
from the marine lap into the stomach of the capital

this country of poets and fabbri with right to all
tasting of blood and volcanic soil for passion
this new helplessness of there being no solitude
because the power grid grows ever stronger

this country of eyes on the flawed and favourable moon
the black cat of the company purring in surrender
this country still waiting for the knights of faith
to pull a ghost closer to the chair beside it
and toss a cent into the ocean.

O AMOR NO INSTANTE EM QUE É DESTRUÍDO
substitui o trabalho dos deuses:
repor o que nunca foi seu

quando acaba, devia ser notícia no jornal
no espaço para atentados
fazer explodir todas as palavras

LOVE AT THE INSTANT IT IS DESTROYED
takes over the work of the gods:
restoring what was never theirs

when it ends, it ought to make the papers
in the column about attacks
blow up every word
fall from the third floor to the ground floor
occupy miles of asphalt
and in the end play on the radio

but not even Bach has hands so large
so explicit as to play that melody

I know those who have died of love
lucid, important, made-up
their eyes fixed on the illuminated bruise
without old age having reserved for them
surviving the saddest news in the world:
Bonnie & Clyde were murdered today at dawn.

The days stretch over one another
behind the buildings, tar and birds
translating the plain sustaining of facts

the arms and those matchless heroes
remain sharp and agreeable
they await your arrival with raised fists
they meow for food, scraps of tuna

I write from the suburban capital
where decreation was conceived
at the mercy of the cathartic function
with its small and great life
marching before the mirror, licking its fur

I too will set out toward destiny
with a crooked cigarette, biting my collar
marching before the mirror, licking my fur
thinking of life as a tender abyss
brushing my hair like Hera before going to war.

a panela cósmica, o eterno sal

WE ARE PLANNING A REVOLUTION

A woman does not remain an angel for very long.
Amid the vapours, the mother superior said,
you will find the nous of Anaxagoras
the cosmic pot, the eternal salt

and so we fornicate, marry, organize ourselves
domestic angels by theological virtues
we make breastwork and sunshade against adverse winds
we rustle among lunchboxes laden
with contradictory portable sandwiches
of lettuce and egg sealed against death

we eat the last dish of sand
we eviscerate roots from the middle ages
we administer superpowers
we win the nobel prize

spinning among visceral seaweed
we dive into the water in search of Virginia Woolf
we ruin the family holiday.
We are cruel. We hope no one notices.
